At his uncle’s behest, the young Karl-Heinrich, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Karlsburg, is sent to Heidelberg to study for a year. After a joyless youth in the gloomy, stately Karlsburg Castle, the prince embarks on the most carefree period of his life. He falls hopelessly in love with Käthi, the charming daughter of his landlords. But duty calls: the prince is gravely ill, and Karl-Heinrich must return to assume his duties as heir apparent and future ruler.

Prince Karl Heinz enjoys his carefree life as a student in Heidelberg. He falls in love with the beautiful Käthe and everything is fine and dandy till his father is reported very ill.

Anja has retreated to finish her master's thesis. As much as she tries, she is stuck in her work. This situation seems to repeat itself with her relationship to her boyfriend Paul. When her grandmother dies and the family gathers at the funeral in The Hague, Anja flees to the seafront. Walking the beach she feels her solitude and starts to see herself in a different light.

Heidi heads to the Heidelberg Christmas market to sell her hand-painted ornaments. While there, she falls for a local artisan who helps her reconnect with her lost heritage.
